A NIGHT OF APOCALYPTIC TERROR

MISTRESS
Formed in Birmingham during 1999, MISTRESS have released two albums
to date  “Mistress” and “The Chronovisor”  to rave
reviews and have gigged with the likes of NAPALM DEATH, MAYHEM,
ELECTRIC WIZARD, BOLT THROWER and EXTREME NOISE TERROR. Their
hard-to-pin-down sound comes across as a sickening
sludge/grind/doom hybrid, reminsicent of the early U.K. grind scene
of the late ’80s and early ’90s, and has been described as “a vile
musical bastard, a bilious, screaming, snot-faced sludge orphan
with all the taste and decorum of a sexual encounter in Wormwood
Scrubbs.”

FAST LADY
“Is this the real life? Or is this just fantasy?” harked words
transcribed by the late great Freddie Mercury. His emotion drenched
in reverb and operatic in it’s execution. How could he have known
then that aside from the hedonistic pleasure trove that was the
seventies that in the next century we would remiss those words and
regret that we were not his friend or crusted bed toy.We now find
ourselves 6 years into a century of throw away pop stars and in
desperate need of some musical lidament substantial enough to stem
the flow of emotion from the arrow gauged corporate wound that
punctured our rock hearts. If thirsty then drink from our cup and if
weary lay your head upon our laps.

HADDONFIELD ILLINOIS
Have you ever wondered what a band comprised of the bastard
offspring of John Carpenter and born into the heavy metal Mecca
that is Birmingham would sound like? The answer would be this,
clearly influenced by 70’s Italian zombie films they take the 3
chord punk ethos of yesteryear and apply it to synthesizers,
electro beats and layers of noise to create a strain of mutant
electronic
doom.

“Those who have understanding reckon the number of the
beast. For it is
a human number…” and in this case, the number is 06/06/06.
To rightly celebrate this most satanic of dates, Capsule have
enlisted local
grind-sludge-punk scumbags Mistress to head up an evening of bands
doing
the devils work exclusively. With main support from terrifyingly
heavy
Londoners Art Of Burning Water. Further proof that the devil
definitely has the
monopoly on the best tunes.

EXTREME NOISE TERROR – cancelled

CANCELLED

Extreme Noise Terror formed in January 1985 and at their first
gig were
immediately signed up by Manic Ears Records. The first release was
a split
album with Chaos U.K. ‘Radioactive’ firmly stamping their caustic
arrival
all over an unsuspecting music scene, mixing metallic aggression
with punk
attitude, leaving an indelible impact, helped in no small way by
(at the
time) a totally original barbaric double vocal attack.
1987 Proved a significant year for ENT as Radio 1 DJ John Peel
became very interested after seeing the band live and offered them
a session on Radio 1.
Which was later released on vinyl by the BBC.

Big Business
Narcosis
Creepy Morons

If, after getting drunk on cheap whiskey you stumbled onto a
highway, an earthquake started, and then you were struck by an
oncoming eighteen wheeler, you might be able to understand the
massive force, chaos, and rock and roll mayhem behind Big
Business’s debut full-length Head For The Shallow.

Big Business is a two-piece hardcore-influenced rock act from
Seattle featuring Jared Warren of Karp and the Whip on bass and
vocals and Coady Willis of Murder City Devils on drums. The two
combine a heavy, sludgy, and rumbling bass tone with tenacious and
violent drumming to create a furious and exciting rock band. Think
Drive Like Jehu if they stripped down their sound to just bass and
drums and listened to nothing but 70’s hard rock and 80’s
metal.

EINSTELLUNG (ex Sally/Cable  Regime/Godflesh)
Häxan

Tarantula A.D. a band who meld classical techniques of
composition with rock and heavy metal elements.
You can’t
fault Tarantula A.D. for talent. Each of the group’s three members
— Danny Bensi, Saunder Jurriaans, and Gregory Rogove — play
multiple instruments passionately if not always virtuosically. The
songs on the album combine chamber-music sounds of cello, violin
and piano with the more familiar rock sounds of guitar, bass, and
drums in multi-tracked layers, with complex interplay of
instrumentation and thematic elaboration, so that it’s rare the
music sounds as thin as a trio.

They have collaborated with:Sierra Casady from CoCoRosie, Alexander
and Damon McMahon from Inouk, and Devendra Banhart.

This new Midlands based ‘post DOOM’ ‘ trio mix crushing dreamy
soundscapes,
eerie folk and psychedelic slabs of guitar to illustrate their
own
apocalyptic vision of a decaying natural world. Influenced by
everything
from Neurosis and Jesu to Agalloch and Slint, they utilise rising
chords and
simple picked guitars to hypnotising effect.

RAMESSES
SOURVEIN
GODDAM OX

Sourvein came crawling into the East Coast / Southern
underground in
late 1992 with a single mission; to become one of the heaviest and
most
tour worn bands in America. Mission accomplished!

Inspired by heavy-weights like The Accused, Motorhead, Saint
Vitus,
Black Flag and early COC, Sourvein took the DIY approach with
their
vision and created a lurking monster of audible despair and a
word-of-mouth campaign that continues to build a cult-like
following.

“There’s something diseased about their sound; the tracks have
a
morbid sickness to them, and the gut reaction of good, decent folk
is
to stay the hell away.” – StonerRock.com

A good review by Julian Cope

RAMESSES’ original and devastating sound embodies torrential
riffing,
freeform psychedelic jams and enigmatic spells. Emerging from
the
deepest forests of Dorset, England, this three piece formed in
2003
when ex-Electric Wizard drummer Mark Greening and guitarist Tim
Bagshaw
hooked up with Adam Richardson (bass + vox), formerly of Lord
of
Putrefaction, Spirmyard, and Hexed.

TAINT (Rise Above)
SIKA  REDEM

Taint

As teenagers Taint formed in 1994’s South Wales DIY punk/metal
scene. After a string of formative demo cassettes the ‘Die Die
Truthspeaker’ mini-album was released in 2000, on London’s
Household Name records. Playing national shows with such bands as
Acrimony, Avail, Boy Sets Fire, Canvas, Capdown, Cathedral,
Consumed, Converge, Clutch, Earth Crisis, Hard To Swallow, Iron
Monkey, Stampin’ Ground, Spirit Caravan and Will Haven gave the
band great experience in honing their craft of sludge-y
discordances and emotionally charged outpourings. ‘Die Die
Truthspeaker’ garnered the band comparisons to such diverse bands
as Black Sabbath and Slint, a precedent to the glut of derivative
Neurosis-ites and post-rock/metal amalgams that are so currently en
vogue, 5 years later.

Knut

Complexly beautiful soundscape from Switzerland’s Knut, ambient
heavy metal. Formerly labeled as a “groove-oriented tech band,”
Knut change gears slightly with Terrafomer, propagating a more
Neurosis-influenced tribal beat – sludgy riffs, slow tempos and
atmospheric sounds – yet weaving back in their own math-y style.
Repetition and trance-y beats frame the anguished, guttural vocals,
with words that sound like they might be in English, or might not –
it’s hard to say!  Their perfection of hypnotic, heavy
radiance puts them easily in league with the most sacred heroes of
the genre.

Sika Redem
The West Midlands has always had a knack of being on the cutting
edge of metal whether its with the forefathers of the genre, Black
Sabbath, the early thrash of Napalm Death or it’s newest hopes Sika
Redem, who somehow manage to have more creativity in one ten minute
track than most bands cover in a complete LP. Complex intricate
rhythms combine with crushingly heavy riffs all containing a
melodic edge that metal so often forgets about.
