SOME GIRLS + MALKOVICH + NOISE NOISE ALLORE

SOME GIRLS
(
Members of The Locust, Swing Kids, Holy Molar, Give Up The
Ghost)

MALKOVICH

NOISE NOISE ALLORE

Some Girls have managed to turn the hardcore
scene on edge in these two short years since they started. Starting
merely as a loud crash and some simple ideas, they’ve progressed
into a powerful blitzkrieg of a band. With release of only two 7″
EP’s and a few legendary performances, Some Girls have truly become
headturners and groundbreakers within the punk/harcore world.

Some Girls is comprised of a cast of members that includes Wes
Eisold (Give Up The Ghost, American Nightmare), Rob Moran
(Unbroken, OVer My Dead Body), and Justin Pearson (The Locust,
Swing Kids, Holy Molar) among their collective line-up. Each member
brings their own approach and past musical history to the fold
creating Some Girls unique personality. A character that reeks of
the punk days of old while conjuring the raw musical urgency and
poetic prowess of the members’ previous artistic
accomplishments.

According to their label Reflections Records, Malkovich combine
the groove of JR Ewing and Refused with the apocalyptic yet
controlled chaos and intensity of Converge and spicing it up with a
little classic Guns ‘N Roses. Malkovich’ songs are an intricate
tangled web of heavy and screeching guitars, hard hitting drums,
groovy basslines with passionate vocals. Abrasive, noisy and
dynamic modern hardcore with sheer brilliance in concept and
delivery!
Or as the band says: “We created a classical masterpiece dedicated
to vultures, shaved pussies and total doom!”

BORIS + UNA CORDA + MOTHER TRUCKER

BORIS (Japan – Southern Lord)
UNA CORDA
MOTHER TRUCKER

“Southernlords’ favorite, and most
excellent Japanese power trio; BORIS are back with another offering
from their eclectic catalog. Akuma No Uta is a 39 minute, six song
album that offers up a variety of styles from past Boris albums,
drawing from the heavier-than-thou rumble of Absolutego and
Amplifier Worship (both previously released on Southern Lord), to
the exquisite beauty of Flood, and the sheer jams-out-kickin’ of
Heavy Rocks.”

Una corda hail from Birmingham, England. Featuring two
guitarists, two bass players and una drummer, the band features
ex-members of illustrious underground acts-Cradle, Marker, Ackbar
and Mistress. Their unorthodox line up makes heavy music for light
sleepers, a darkly melodic epic soundscape carved out with black
headspinning riffs.

Formed in October 2003 Mother Trucker is the creation of Charles
Butler (Guitar), Thomas Moffat (Bass), James Davison (Drums) and
Christopher Scrivens (Guitar) from Birmingham in the UK.

Drawing influences from a wide range of bands like Black
Sabbath, Kyuss, Mogwai, Tool, Slint, Red Sparowes, Pelican &
Isis the instrumental four piece aim to build upon their
contemporaries earlier works and create a meaty slab of music they
can call their own.

“Anyone who can write such punishing riffs deserves
success”

KK.NULL + Z’EV + ESQUILAX

KK.NULL (Japan – Zeni Geva)
Z’EV
ESQUILAX

This show brings together in collaboration two fiercely
independent and forceful musical forces for the very first time.
Shape shifting artists exploring the outer terrain for over a
quarter of a century and rarely playing live in the UK, this tour
pitches the two together in near comic fantasy. for they are
the..Original Gangsters Of Noise.. Of course now the .noise.
aesthetic or label hardly describes their outer-music exploration
at all but it is through their ability to hear music in the modern
din, the sound of space(s) and the constant rhythm of life that
their music orientates itself.

KK. NULL is a heavy dude billowing huge crafted cosmic sound into
the ear. A cult underground experimental Japanese musician whose
contemporaries include Merzbow and Otomo Yoshide.

Starting his career in the early 80’s by performing guitar
improvisations in the clubs and streets of Tokyo, he gained wider
notoriety as the leader, guitarist and singer of STEVE ALBINI
produced  progressive hardcore trio ZENI GEVA. Yet it’s his
solo work that has earned him a devout following in avant circles.
He has already developed an extensive arsenal of musical talent:
composer, improviser, singer, electronic wiz, drummer, and even
Butoh dancer. Recently his penchant is for indefinable atmospheric
electronics with a wild improv bent. He has worked with dozens of
bands and artists, which reads like a role call of the most
exciting musicians on the planet: JOHN ZORN, JIM O’ROURKE, RUINS,
MELT BANANA, BOREDOMS, OTOMO YOSHIDE, and EARTH.

Z.EV was involved in the USA.s early industrial movement. His
involvement has evolved through sound-art loops and installations
moving through pagan magik trance, mallet and metal noise-pieces,
Indonesian influenced drumscapes and sensory rhythm deprivation to
limitless music.

As dark, experimental punk was meshing  with art school in
70’s Europe, Z’EV brought non-traditional percussive voicings to
the NYC avant-garde scene (influencing Brian Eno among
others). Since then he’s explored ‘spatial poetics’ in
athletic yet graceful live performances that utilise colossal
metallic sheets, giant coil springs, interconnected pipes and other
found materials culled from the junkyards of the globe. His dozens
of collaborative projects include work with JOHN CAGE, GLENN
BRANCA, HAFLER TRIO, PSYCHIC TV, and RHYTHM &  NOISE. He
has released on TOUCH, STAALPLATT, SOLEILMOON and TZADIK amongst
many.

RED SPAROWES + MADE OUT OF BABIES + UNA CORDA

RED SPAROWES
MADE OUT OF BABIES
UN A
CORDA
http://www.seetickets.com

Red Sparowes is epic without bombast, heavy without a single
barre-chord riff and eviscerating without any clearly audible
vocals. The chiming, spindly layers of effect-laden guitars and the
swinging, entrancing drums on its Neurot Recordings debut At the
Soundless Dawn create textures reminiscent of Goblin, Tones on
Tail, Godspeed You Black Emperor and early Sonic Youth. Its attack
is syrupy and serpentine; subtle but frighteningly
deliberate.

Red Sparowes is comprised of Bryant
Clifford Meyer on guitar (Isis), Josh Graham on guitar (Neurosis
visuals and acclaimed video director), Greg Burns on bass and pedal
steel (also of Temporary Residence dark chamber folk sextet Halifax
Pier), Andy Arahood on bass/guitar (Angel Hair) and David Clifford
on drums (The VSS, Pleasure Forever).

As its playfully gruesome name
might imply, Made Out of Babies is not a demure or delicate band —
it’s an aberration of innocence.

In the tradition of artists as evocative as Jesus Lizard; as
imaginative and impassioned as Bjork; as discomfortingly frank as
Big Black and as unnerving as filmmaker Alejandro Jodorowsky, the
New York City quartet summons a wholly unique claustrophobic fury.
It’s an eye-opening revision of everything that had once seemed
acceptable and rational.

LIARS + LEOPARD LEG + FORMATION FLIGHT

LIARS
LEOPARD LEG
FORMATION FLIGHT

“There are very few bands around at the moment that possess the
kind of wit, imagination and guts to make sure that every time they
release a record it sounds nothing like their last. Thank God,
then, for Liars” – Pat Long, NME

Drum’s Not Dead, the band’s third album and the follow up to
2004’s They Were Wrong, So We Drowned was partly inspired by a
relocation from New York to Berlin. It finds the band taking
another seismic step forward, switching continents and seizing new
musical territory. It’s also their finest and fullest album to
date, shredding all past reference points.

Formation Flight
Interwoven guitar driving rhythms and heart felt vocals combine to
make what
is known as formation flight. Although playing together for a
number of
years only recently after the decision was taken to enlist a full
time
vocalist Thomas Wagstaff (mynameislegion, Knives, Death of a
Champion) has
the step been taken to enter the live realm. Other members also
include Alex
(deadsunrising, shards of narsil, frost), Labran (deadsunrising,
solway
fifth), dave (spine), and pezza.

SUNNO))) + EARTH

SUNN 0))) vs EARTH

Earth, the legendary Seattle group. As it was in the beginning,
Earth is still helmed by Dylan Carlson, joined by permanent member
Adrienne Davies on drums / percussion. Dylan Carlson is regarded as
an innovator within ambient, experimental, drone, doom circles. His
compositions and playing can be credited with influencing diverse
groups and musicians such as: Sunn O))), Boris, Jim O •Rourke,
Mogwai, Justin Broaderick (Godflesh/Jesu) and even Kurt
Cobain.

In the past Earth t ook the heaviness of Black Sabbath and the
Melvins to an even slower more mammoth plane. With •Hex …•they
have incorporated these new influences into an innovative sound all
their own.It •s a sound that is bold, vital and as essential as
anything they have ever done in the past, arguabley more so.

SUNN 0))) is a side project of Khanate/Burning Witch (Steve O’
Malley) and Goatsnake (Greg Anderson) members. It was formed in
memory of the cult drone-riff founders EARTH and honors the
beautiful Ozma. The SUNN0))) mission is to create trance like
soundscapes with the ultimate low end/bottom frequencies intended
to massage the listeners intenstines into a act of defecation.

AFTER SHOW PARTY @ SCRUFFY MURPHYS FROM 9.30PM

TWO FLOORS OF HEAVY METAL ACTION

Ladies and gentlemen, air-guitars at the ready. Heavy metal was
Birmingham and the Black Country’s gift to the world, and tonight
the gift will be returned.

Sam Dunn is a thirtysomething anthropology student and
self-confessed headbanger from Toronto. In making this film he
travelled through the blood and guts of the metal community,
talking to fans, kneeling at the feet of legends, stage-diving, and
on the whole having more fun than any documentary-maker is strictly
entitled to. What makes Metal such a joy to watch is Dunn’s
infectious pleasure in this much-derided music.

The film does touch on the movement’s dark side, including the
Norwegian death metallers connected with a series of
church-burnings, but on the whole this is a film about metal as a
force for good – most clearly in the 80s footage where we see Dee
Snider (of Twisted Sister) in front of the US Senate, persuasively
defending his spandex tribe from Tipper Gore’s concerned parents
campaign. Other advocates include Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden,
Lemmy from Motorhead, and Alice Cooper.

Star billing, however, should be reserved for guitarist Tony
Iommi, too often eclipsed in recent years by his Black Sabbath
colleague Ozzy Osborne. Sat back in his Warwickshire mansion, Iommi
talks with beguiling honesty about growing up in Aston, about
overdoing it in the 70s, and about Sabbath’s fondness for
crucifixes.

“Superbly crafted documentary is strong enough to make believers
out of non-metalheads, and inside enough to get the devil’s-horns
salute from the most diehard followers.” – Variety
Part of the Flatpack Festival, an unholy mishmash of shorts,
animation, music docs and live events in venues around Birmingham
from 19-22 January 2006.
