MELT BANANA + BRIAN DUFFY & MODIFIED TOY ORCHESTRA + NOISE NOISE ALLORE

MELT BANANA
BRIAN DUFFY & MODIFIED TOY ORCHESTRA
NOISE NOISE ALLORE

Out of the old ashes sizzle and scream a new wave and
realization simply called MELT-BANANA. A maelstrom of experimental
heart surgery, Melt Banana walk on water, They effortlessly juggle
all of those sharks that think they’re swimming in new, unexplored
territories. Here are the imported children of the no waves gone
by, a hardcore-informed, audio info overload from Tokyo’s ferocious
underground. MELT-BANANA sweat out a super-adrenalized,
maxi-caffeinated collision of frenzied drum rhythms and torturous
guitar squeals through tiny, frantic, hyperrhythmic little songs.
Frontwoman Yasuko O.’s ultra-high-pitched screeches and Agata’s
screaming slide guitar vie for supremacy across a rhythmic frenzy
that is so ridiculous and precise, it will crush you with it’s
brilliance. Here are the cerebral gnashing guitars, the aggravated
pep squad proclamations and the neck-snapping rhythm change-ups
irresistible to those seeking a new musical truth. MELT-BANANA
doesn’t sound like anything you’ve heard. Simply put, they are
unclassifiable. If that’s not enough for you…. well then, back
into your cave Grogar

The UK’s foremost circuit bender. Ever wanted to see a ‘speak and
spell’ sing like the devil or wished to see a  hula girl
toy  take a darker more satanic route? Now is your chance as
Brians’ army of robot toys march onward to create twisted pop of
the most disturbing order.

Noise Noise Allore
Take their cues from such post punk luminaries as devo and gang of
four but add an urgency that is all their own, a world where
rhythmic time changes vie for attention with angular shards of
guitar and a vocalist that can barley contain the voice from within
his own body, a highly charged sexual rush of a show that will
leave you confused and wanting more..as all good lovers do. Expect
fruity fun.

A year on from John Peel’s untimely death, a legion of bands, promoters and music-lovers will be gathering at events up and down the country to celebrate his legacy. During an unparalleled 40-year broadcasting career Peel was responsible for introducing UK listeners to everything from crackly old bluegrass to pounding techno, as well as giving a vital first break to countless influential artists including David Bowie, Joy Division, The Smiths and more recently the White Stripes.

As with so many other cities, Birmingham’s music scene owes him a huge debt for the inspiration, exposure and encouragement which his programmes provided. On Thursday 13th October, a selection of acts who benefitted from his adventurous ears will be gathering at the Jug of Ale in Moseley to raise a glass in tribute and provide the kind of mixed-up musical entertainment that the man himself might have enjoyed. Line-up includes Mistress, Harpies, Mike in Mono. Acoustic sets from Ben Calvert + James Summerfield and dj sets from Pram, Nicholas Bullen, Chris Clarke and Static Caravan.

DROPTHELIME

KID606
It has become increasingly difficult over the last few years to
imagine the electronic music landscape without having to make room
for Miguel Depedro, a.k.a. kid606. Only twenty-four years old, he
has already released three full-length studio albums, several
radically divergent remix albums, a handful of split albums,
countless singles, as well as making a number of compilation
appearances and being approached for remixes on a regular
basis.

From his now legendary reworking of N.W.A.’s Straight Outta
Compton (V/VM/Tigerbeat6) to his foray into minimal techno with
P.S. I Love You (Mille Plateaux), through to his highly praised
mash-up full-length, The Action Packed Mentallist Brings You the
Fucking Jams (Violent Turd), the kid has consistently sabotaged
categorization of his work by remaining true to its core; his
violence is against sound, against the sounds of comfort, against
the sounds listeners expect.

DEERHOOF + THE DRONES + ALEXANDER TUCKER

ATP Recordings night
Deerhoof
The Drones
Alexander Tucker

As unlikely as any band in recent memory to transcend outsider status
and garner glowing reviews from around the globe, Deerhoof may be about
to enter uncharted territory for such a steadfastly and delightfully
weird band. Completely throwing out the indie-rock rulebook, with the
lead vocalist writing and singing in fractured English and the
arrangements in a constant state of simultaneous evolution and
disintegration, the band has moved along its artistic progression in
fits and starts, slowly gravitating toward a more cohesive identity.
Still, that these musicians have been able to converge the most
improbable summit of high-concept art and pop accessibility – splitting
the difference between noise and melody, delirious immediacy and
off-putting abrasiveness – has to be considered one of the most
implausible developments of early 21st century indie rock. And now,
quite surprisingly, they’re being rewarded for it. No band since Sonic
Youth has been more capable of making otherwise difficult or esoteric
art seem like a mass consumer product. (Matt Fink, Delusions of
Adequacy)

Formed in Melbourne, The Drones are a magical but terrifying ride
toward the edge of danger… sometimes chaotic and stern, sometimes
melodic and joyful. Emerging as one of the best new bands in Australia,
the combination of Mike Noga (drums) Fiona Kitschin (bass) Gareth
Liddiard (vocals/guitar) Rui Pereira (guitar) have signed to
ATP/Recordings for the release of their album, ‘Wait Long By The River
and the Bodies of Your Enemies Will Float By’. This is the proof – well
and truly of one of the most intense and gifted bands in the world, on
stage and record. The distillation of Australian rock n roll history
condensed in one perfectly formed album.

Alexander Tucker has recently released Old Fog which illustrates his
use of field recordings and tape loops. This release is a delicate and
beautiful record that feels like a soundtrack to a winter evening,
evoking an eerie feeling that haunts listeners to seek more. His
commanding performance as a musician has lead to invitations to play
guest guitar slots with the likes of Jackie-O Motherfucker, Sunn 0)))
and Bardo Pond. His solo live shows are also a powerful document,
showing that playing alone with a 4 track can sometimes be more
effective than many live bands can offer. Throughout 2005 Alexander has
honed his craft well and supported Nina Nastasia, Olivia Tremor
Control, Fly Pan Am, Michael Gira’s Angels of Light and most recently
Dinosaur Jr.

NOXAGT + CALVADOS BEAM TRIO + KNIVES

NOXAGT
CALVADOS BEAM TRIO
KNIVES

Hailing from Norway, Noxagt have come to burn your dirty soul.
Three piece in the bass, guitar, and drums format.  Their
records are pummeling masterpieces. Songs that breathe through
their mouth very loudly. Noxagt is at the forefront of the Nor-Wave
movement that takes cues from the American wrecking units like
LIGHTNING BOLT and PINK AND BROWN and adds a distinctly Norwegian
heavy slant.

NOXAGT’s music emphasises a heavy and powerful rhythm section,
with a
massive downtuned bass guitar and crushing, often shifting drums.
The
droning viola of Nils Erga has now been substituted for the
experimental
guitar playing of Anders Hana.

Anders is also a member of Jaga Jazzist, Ultralyd and Morthana.
His
roots are in free improvisation and his resumé includes
performances
with Trevor Dunn (Fantomas), Paal Nilssen-Love and Mats
Gustafsson.

NOXAGT is for fans of hard rock and swinging unconventional
riffage, dirty crawl such as the MELVINS, and single minded pummel
like label-mates/touring partners LIGHTNING BOLT.

RADIO IACON ‘THE GOLDEN AGE OF STATIC’

IACON perform  ‘THE GOLDEN AGE OF STATIC’
+visuals by Colour Burst
Film programme by 7inch Cinema

” You know how I adjusted to
that problem of the radio in the environment? Very much the same as
primitive people adjusted to the animals that frightened them. They
drew pictures of them on their caves. And so I simply made a piece
using radios.”
J. Cage

Radio Iacons golden age of static explores an analogue escape
from some of the traditional constraints that performers and
audiences face alike. By performing via the airwaves, transmitting
to over one hundred second hand radios of different ages (even radio devices for kids) and design, ranging from modern to retro, resulting in differing degrees of tone, EQ, warmth and volume, creating a new listening experience. Usually sound artists or musicians within a concert
environment are bound by the performance template of having a PA
with all the leads & wires that are necessary to support this.
The PA produces sound from a single direction/two way split, which
could be considered a limitation on the audio experience of the
audience i.e. a two-dimensional stationary sound. The Golden Age of
Static is a performance that stretches the audience’s experience as
well as the performers. Instead of the audience experience being
non-interactive and docile, facing in a single direction for the
whole event, audience members are invited to participate by
bringing there own portable radios, engaging with the sound, moving
around the venue. Hearing a wide variety of radio transmissions
will alter the whole listening experience, the sound will evolve
and mutate as you meander through the unfolding dynamic sonic
adventure.

The Golden Age of Static also reaches beyond the realms of a
sonic experience. As well as the aesthetic impact of a hundred
radios Radio Iacon are working with visual artists, animators, film
makers and image manipulators, exploring the themes of radio,
broadcast, interference and static. The sound performance will be
enhanced by an installation of projections, old TV’s, cameras and
monitors.
